EcoHale stems from the simple question, how can we make inhalers more sustainable? This question resulted in a several month research and design sprint to find the answer. From tearing down typical inhalers, conducting life cycle analysis, requesting grant funding, facilitating Public and Patient Involvement and Engagement sessions via JG Technology and Keele University, and conceptualising new, but simple adaptations to inhalers to make them more sustainable.
We discovered that typical Pressurised Metered Dose Inhalers (pMDIs) can't be reused after use due to the stem and nozzle becoming blocked, and also the risk of bacteria growth due to difficulties regarding cleaning and caring for your inhaler.
To mitigate these two issues, we creatively removed the nozzle from the mouthpiece, and secured it to a replaceable canister, while also changing the internal geometry of the mouthpiece to make it easily cleanable.
The final technology demonstrator was proudly showcased by the Haughton Design team at PharmaPack 2024 and featured a lot of interest from Pharmaceutical companies and Contract Development & Manufacturing Organisations.
